PRESCHOOL MUSIC AND ART (2.7-3.3 years)
This program, where children explore a diverse repertoire of music and art, is responsive to the developmental needs of older twos and young threes. Storytelling, block-building, puppets, puzzles, and physical play using tunnels and balls are also part of the curriculum. By listening, singing, moving, and playing rhythm instruments, children experience the elements of music through a repertoire of international folk songs, Diller-Quaile songs, and classical excerpts. Through hands-on experiences, children are exposed to a broad range of artistic media and techniques as they create drawings, paintings, collages, prints, clay, and wood sculptures. (Smocks are provided by the School.) Circle games, classroom jobs, and informal show and tell routines also provide varied learning opportunities. A child-centered and gradual separation process guides each child to independence in the classroom. In addition to a head music teacher, a head art teacher, and an assistant teacher, every class features a pianist who improvises accompaniments in a variety of musical styles.
