Early Childhood Music Education

PRESCHOOL MUSIC AND ART (2.7-3.3 years)
A gradual separation process guides children to independence in a school setting as they explore a diverse repertoire of music and art. Small percussion instruments include drums, bells, shakers, and rhythm sticks, as well as less common percussion instruments from around the world. Storytelling, block-building, puppets, puzzles, and active play using tunnels and balls are also part of the curriculum. By listening, singing, moving, and playing rhythm instruments, children experience the elements of music through a repertoire of international folk songs, Diller-Quaile songs, and classical excerpts. Through hands-on experiences, children are exposed to a broad range of artistic media and techniques as they create drawings, paintings, collages, prints, and sculptures. Circle games, classroom jobs, and informal show and tell routines also provide varied learning opportunities. In addition to a head music teacher, a head art teacher, and an assistant teacher, every class features a pianist who improvises accompaniments in a variety of musical styles.
