PLAY THE INSTRUMENT (4&5 years)
In a group setting, teachers introduce young students to the basic steps of learning to play percussion instruments, piano, violin, cello, and recorder. Percussion instruments (including xylophones and glockenspiels), are studied initially to help build the foundation for understanding music concepts pertaining to dynamics, rhythm, and melody. For each instrument, students become familiar with the timbre, proper postural positions for producing sounds, and music terminology. A head teacher and a pianist are with the class throughout the year, and are joined by guest faculty. Lessons incorporate Suzuki preparatory materials that utilize specially sized "cherub" violins, and personalized charts. Listening, singing, and movement are an integral part of each music-filled class. This course is designed to build confidence and readiness for subsequent instruction in Diller-Quaile's instrument programs. The order in which the instruments are studied throughout the year may vary.*
