ARC DUO AND THE DILLER-QUAILE SCHOOL OF MUSIC
RECEIVE AND DEBUT NEW DAVID LEISNER FLUTE/GUITAR WORK
Arc Duo and The Diller-Quaile School of Music are pleased to announce the receipt of a new piece from world renowned guitarist and composer, David Leisner. "Away," based on the American folk tune 'Shenandoah,' is a one-movement, 11-minute work for flute and guitar.
"Away," will receive its world premiere by Arc Duo at The Diller-Quaile School of Music in New York City on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at 7:30 PM. Since this piece is the product of a commission, the publication will not be released to the general public until early 2010, and "Away" will be performed exclusively by Arc Duo until that time. This piece marks the sixth work commissioned by The Diller-Quaile School of Music for Arc Duo.
DAVID LEISNER is an extraordinarily versatile musician with a distinguished career as guitarist, composer and teacher. As composer, Leisner is noted for the emotional and dramatic power of his music, which has been performed worldwide. His best-known "Dances in the Madhouse" has received hundreds of performances. An extensive discography includes the much-praised recent Cedille CD, "Acrobats," performed by the Cavatina Duo, and his compositions are published by several major publishers, including Theodore Presser Co. and G. Schirmer. Leisner also maintains a busy career as a concert guitarist, performing in recital and as soloist with orchestras around the world. Winner of top prizes in international guitar competitions at Geneva and Toronto, he is a featured solo artist with Azica Records, and has also recorded on the Telarc, Naxos, Koch, and Etcetera labels. Leisner is currently the co-chair of the guitar department at the Manhattan School of Music.
ARC DUO (Heather Holden, flute; Bradley Colten, guitar) was born from an unwavering dedication to the music and composers of our time, a shared approach to music-making, and a passion for performance. Arc Duo's performance highlights include recitals at renowned venues such as Caramoor Music Festival, Lincoln Center, Merkin Concert Hall, and Carnegie Hall, in addition to venues throughout the United States and Canada. In upcoming seasons, Arc Duo will premiere new pieces by David Schober, Reena Esmail and Edie Hill. Arc Duo has received high praise from some of the leading artists of today, such as Ned Rorem, Joan Tower, Paula Robison, David Starobin, and Linda Chesis.
Arc Duo has been an ensemble-in-residence at The Diller-Quaile School of Music in New York City since 2003. Each year as part of their residency, the School presents Arc Duo in recital, commissions a major new work for the Duo, and engages Heather and Bradley as educators in the classroom and beyond. In 2003, Arc Duo initiated a residency partnership program between Diller-Quaile and Mt. Sinai Medical Center, where they perform regular concerts for patients, families, and staff at the Cardiac Care Center. Additionally, Arc Duo was awarded a 2006 Chamber Music America Residency Partnership Grant to fund the Duo's outreach program with Lenox Hill Neighborhood House in New York City. This grant funded a year of workshops and concerts for those who would not normally have access to classical music.
