MUSIC AND ART FOR NEARLY TWOS AND TWOS (20 months-2.6 years)
Through movement, singing, listening, and playing instruments, children experience the joys of music-making with favorite melodies, fingerplays, rhythmic chants, and international folk songs. Small percussion instruments include drums, bells, shakers, and rhythm sticks, as well as less common percussion instruments from around the world. A wide variety of engaging props -- including scarves, puppets, and hoops -- enrich the program. The art experiences develop the creative impulse and encourage independent activity and group interaction. Children create drawings, paintings, clay and wood sculptures, prints, and other projects. Media (such as tempera, fingerpaints, watercolors, markers, craypas, chalks, and collage materials) and art tools (including brushes, scrapers, rollers, and sponges) are explored. The classroom environment is artistically stimulating and encourages exploration, interaction, and discovery. (Smocks are provided by the School.) In addition to a head music teacher and a head art teacher, every class features a pianist who improvises accompaniments in a variety of musical styles.
