VOICE PROGRAM
voice programVoice study for the young beginner through the advanced high school student is centered on the acquisition of technical skill and musicianship. The study of classical repertoire supports the development of a healthy, age-appropriate vocal production, with repertoire and study materials tailored to the individual student. By encouraging students to sing with a sound appropriate for their voice and age, we provide a foundation for further vocal development into the adult years. Students generally interview for individual study at age ten or older. Younger students are usually served best by a group singing experience in one of our choruses. If you have questions about readiness for voice study, please contact the School.

The typical program for a beginning student includes an individual lesson and a musicianship class. Musicianship classes support the development of music literacy, which is essential for all singers. Older students take lessons of forty-five minutes to an hour in length, and repertoire class and chamber music as they advance. Advanced high school seniors have the opportunity to perform a full-length solo recital, drawing on repertoire from the standard literature. In addition to the many performing opportunities the School offers, the Voice Department gathers several times each year for Liederabends, informal salon concerts where voice students of all levels of experience share repertoire.
