CHORUS (4 - 7 years)
Children learn international folk songs and experience the joy of singing while developing listening skills. Physical and vocal warm-ups promote an understanding of the healthy use of the body and the voice. Experiences include a cappella and piano-accompanied group singing, with rounds and simple part songs to promote ensemble skills. Children accompany their own singing with percussion instruments such as hand drums, xylophones, and glockenspiels. For the four and five year old choruses, movement is incorporated into every class. Rhythmic and melodic notation is integrated into the classroom experience. Beginning with the six and seven year old chorus, printed music is introduced. This older chorus performs a few selections in Diller-Quaile's winter and spring concerts. In addition to the head teacher, every session features a pianist who accompanies the class repertoire and improvises accompaniments in a variety of musical styles.
